At Duane Reade, An NYPD Officer Got Stabbed While Stopping Shoplifter
Earlier Wednesday, an off-duty NYPD cop working security at a Midtown Duane Reade was slashed by a homeless shoplifter.
Domonique Lax (33 Years Old) was caught in the act as she stole several items at the drugstore in Eighth Avenue near 44th Street by the 52-year-old cop, who was working a night job at the store.
Let’s talk briefly about the Duane Reade store to understand the incident more clearly.
Duane Reade Inc is a chain of pharmacy and convenience stores founded by Walgreens Boots Alliance. Its stores are mainly located in New York City. They are known for high-volume, small store layouts in heavily populated Manhattan locations.
They offer a variety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, health and beauty care items, cosmetics, greeting cards, photo supplies, and photofinishing.
Also, Duane Reade pharmacy, especially Duane Reade NYC, offers lots of free pharmaceuticals, like, Duane Reade Flu Shot for free and Duane Reade Vaccine; all you need is to visit the nearest store or book an appointment.
Lax (shoplifter) slashed a cop with scissors, according to police. Victom was taken to Bellevue Hospital with a “deep cut,” according to police sources.
On scene, authorities arrested Lax, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, three counts of reckless endangerment, obstruction of governmental administration, petit larceny, menacing, harassment, and resisting arrest.
She has no history of arrests – according to cops. However, some of the city’s regular shoplifters have been caught more than once.
Security guard Emily Baez, who has worked at the store for two months, said Wednesday afternoon she did not know the off-duty cop or the alleged attacker.
Although shoplifters often steal toilet paper and baby wipes from stores, she said they are seen “all day, every day.” As a result, she can’t stop them, she said.
“I’m an unarmed woman, so I can’t do much,” Baez said. “My safety is first. So the most I can do is call the cops.”
“He was trying to stop them and got stabbed,” said the woman. “And I don’t want to end up stabbed.”
Despite being armed, Baez said the security guard took a risk on Wednesday morning.
“When they try to stop them, you don’t know what they have with them,” she said. “My company, I can’t stop anyone. The most I can do is communicate with my store manager. So that’s primarily my job – reporting to a store manager.”
Baez said that the shoplifters often sell the stolen goods inside the 8th Avenue Times Square train station.
“It’s horrible,” she said. “It’s sad how you see so many homeless people.”
An employee who declined to be publicly named said the thieves “just took anything, the more expensive stuff like Red Bull…ice cream.”
“Every day, it happens,” the worker said.
“It’s the similar people,” the staff member said, referring to repeat criminals. “There are so many.”
